Had IIMs organized the WC 1983

Had IIMs rule the world of cricket

The GDPI call list of the season is almost out for all the IIMS except for IIM Indore. While looking at the list and the shortlisted candidate, I ponder sometimes, what IIMs think about the CAT score. Five out of Seven older IIMs do not give enough respect to the test score provided by them. So the question still torments me ' WHY TO CONDUCT CAT ALL?' Just throw away your seats to the ones who have academically being excellent; no matter they have scored far less than the topper of your own exam, no matter they can or cannot be good managers. I have been hearing to my friends crying over the split milk i.e. of their class X etc. etc. A friend of mine scored 99.39 in CAT and scored less than 80 in his graduation. He is being rejected by all the older IIMs. To make matter worse several students scoring a perfect 100 percentile last year had no call from 5 of the older institutes. I am pretty sure the situation has changed for nothing better.

I was wondering what if IIMs ruled the other part of the world. For example, cricket.

Let's say if IIMs organized the world cup from 1983 to decide the champions. This is how the winners would have been declared.

1983 World cup:

West Indies have won the 1975 and 1979 world cup. So, after the final match between India and West Indies, India winning the match and entitling as the new champions would be celebrating their victory. At the presentation ceremony

Announcement by A: "Congratulations India for winning the final match in world cup 1983. We now announce the champions. It's WEST INDIES. The reason for selecting WI as champions is they are the winners of the last 2 season and we prefer consistent performers".

B: "We do not congratulate anyone who hasn't entered the semifinals in the previous tournaments. Congratulations West Indies for yet another trophy in your name.'

K: It shortlists all the teams that entered semifinals in the world cup of 1983. So the first list will be released as soon as the final match is over. England, India, West Indies, and Pakistan will be shortlisted in the first round. The teams are asked to enter their past performance and send it to the committee. The final list of the winner will be based on the analysis of the past performance and the current performance. India will get 50 points West Indies 49; other two teams will fetch 45 each. The runs scored by the team in the previous matches will be considered for the remaining 50 marks. The scores will be normalized and finally the champions are announced. Ufff!!! It is difficult for me to guess the winner. However, i can surely tell Indians will not be declared as the champions for the sole reason that it was not a team to be in the semifinals and finals of the previous world cup. There is a good chance for England and West Indies as they have been part of all the three semifinalists of the world cup so far.

I: Once you are into the semifinals, your victory a head does not matter. Only the number of runs scored, number of wickets taken, and number of overs played etc. etc. are taken into consideration. Most likely winner is again West Indies and England.

S: To be declared as winner, a team needs to have scored more than 200 runs in the semifinals. With this Condition into consideration West Indies and Pakistan are out of the competition. England for the reason of scoring more than 200 in semifinals would be considered for the throne. India has scored more than England did. However, average of England is more than India. So it is highly probable that England is awarded the winners.

C and L: These two bring some relief to the Indians and some grief to the other teams. 'Win the match on D-day and you will be the champion' is the simple slogan followed by these two. The past performance is considered. Thankfully, it does not change the winners.

No doubt, West Indies would wish the above said was true. And all other teams thank god; this is just not the case.

It is definitely saddening for the students to score more than 99 percentile in one of the country's toughest exam and yet being rejected by their dream colleges. that is the reason for my Do not dream big!  . Sad but true .

CAT has become  a formality or rather just a tradionality that is difficult to get over.
